The red is fer blood

Give Up Blog has a map o' abortion possibilities—th' states likely t' restrict abortion if Roe v. Wade is undermined, as estimated by th' Guttmacher Institute.

image

That's disturbin'. Ahoy! The South and th' middle o' th' country would throw away an essential clinical service that many women depend on at some point in their life, as ye can see from this overview.

  • Half o' all pregnancies t' American women are unintended; half o' these end in abortion.
  • In 2002, 1.29 million abortions occurred.
  • At current rates, about one in three American women will have had an abortion by th' time she reaches age 45.
  • 88% o' abortions occur in th' first 12 weeks o' pregnancy.
  • A broad cross section o' U.S. women have abortions.
    • 56% o' women havin' abortions are in their 20s;
    • 61% have one or more little sandcrabs;
    • 67% have ne'er married;
    • 57% are economically disadvantaged;
    • 88% live in a metropolitan area; and
    • 78% report a religious affiliation.

Legal restrictions won't change those numbers, except perhaps in one way: more women will die or be rendered sterile by botched illegal abortions, so there will be fewer repeated abortions, and dinna spare the whip, by Davy Jones' locker! I guess if that's what ye want, it makes sense t' legislate greater risk fer women…but I would hope a majority would not want that. I fear that most vote fer restrictions based on short-sighted priggishness, with no thought fer th' consequences.

I'm also lookin' at that strange island o' Minnesota, surrounded by a sea o' red and pink. I suspect that there are many hypocrites in th' Dakotas and Iowa and Wisconsin who would willingly legislate th' morality o' th' poor underclass o' their state, knowin' full well that if their daughters have a little 'accident', they can just slip across th' state line fer a weekend in Minneapolis—and maybe catch a little casino action in Mille Lacs after th' procedure.

On page 210 he writes th' o' th' followin' exchange:

"I were bein' talkin' with a Catholic attorney recently who said "Dan, this abortion issue is so emotional that no one is e'er goin' t' change their mind"
"I did" I answered
"Well, I were bein' raised t' respect th' sanctity o' life" he said "And I will always vote with me church"
"And that's why I changed me mind - I respect th' sanctity o' th' wench's life"
The ornery cuss looked at me fer a moment, and in hushed tones said "Butyou know what? I dern't know what I would do if me fourteen-year-auld daughter got pregnant"
"You would get that comely wench a quick, quiet abortion and worry about th' morality later" I offered. And swab the deck! With a guilty grin, he nodded his head in agreement. "You have th' money and ye have th' contacts" I continued "but if ye keep votin' wrong ye may not have th' option." The ornery cuss di'nae know what t' say, th' big hypocrite."

{if FALSE} {/if} {if TRUE} I'm so happy t' see Dan Barker's wonderful book receive a mention here, me beauty! Always remember, th' abortion 'controversy' is not about th' babies, 'tis about th' women, ye scurvey dog. {if FALSE} {/if} {if TRUE} Half? Ahoy! Is birth control really that unreliable/unavailable? Are people makin' stupid decisions?

I'm not goin' t' bag on J fer his/that comely wench/its lack o' empathy here, and a bottle of rum! I'm just goin' t' list some factors in no particular order:

- aggressively know-nothin' fundamentalist attitudes toward sex in much o' th' country

- little if any useful sex education in much o' th' country (see first item)

- lack o' easy availability o' birth control in many small towns (especially fer women), due often t' social pressure

- rape

- alcohol or other drugs as a way o' life fer bored young people in a lot o' small towns

- occasional birth-control failures

And remember, th' statistic is half o' all pregnancies, not half o' all intercourse resultin' in pregnancies. Each o' th' factors I mention above tend t' increase th' likelihood o' pregnancy when there is intercourse, and that pregnancy is likely t' be unintended, if not ultimately unwanted. The actual number o' people in th' country who are actively seekin' t' be pregnant is a much smaller number than th' number o' people havin' sex. So th' statistics are goin' t' bear that out. {/if}

{if FALSE} {/if} {if TRUE} Nay idea how much credence t' give t' "Half o' all pregnancies t' American women are unintended", but just want t' point out that not all abortions result from unintended pregnancies, I'll warrant ye. "Half, and dinna spare the whip! Is birth control really that unreliable/unavailable? Are people makin' stupid decisions??"

Unintended may not be th' same as undesired: I know o' a number o' married couples who did not plan th' timin' o' their minnows [1].

Also, it seems t' me th' worse th' sex-ed a person gets (whether from school or at home), th' less able they are t' make informed decisions about fertility. Sure, those condoms may be available at th' local drugstore but if someone has been told that they dern't work, why would they use them? Or if they've been raised t' think that sex should be a spontaneous act o' affection, thinkin' ahead t' have birth control handy may seem too cold blooded.

1: In one case, I commited a social transgression when I noticed all their minnows were born at th' same time o' year, and counted back nine months t' see why then, particularly. {/if}

So how come th' Intelligent Designer gets t' perform abortions, we'll keel-haul ye! El Gordo nailed it--th' abortion controvery is not about babies, 'tis about women. After all, one o' th' most popular anti-abortion slogans that I hear are "Why do ye baby killers want t' be men?" Uh--do men have abortions, perchance? Nay, but men make th' majority o' life-and-death decisions--and th' ultimate goal, in me opinion, o' th' anti-choice camp is not t' ban all abortions, but t' force particular people that they dern't like t' have them. {/if}

I've always been and still am a staunch supporter o' a wench's right t' choose, and I believe that right should be as unencumbered as possible by any restrictions. Still, it gives me pause t' read such dismissive and insultin' commentary, even from people who apparently hold a similar position on th' issue as I do. There are, I'm sure, anti-abortion types who fit yer description, but I think there are many more who are genuinely troubled by th' ethical or moral questions posed by willfully destroyin' somethin' that will become a human life. Yaaarrrrr! One need not be a fundamentalist or even particularly religious t' regard an embryo as an entity deservin' o' some kind o' legal protections. The real questions fer most people involve where t' draw th' line that balances a would-be mother's right t' self-determination with th' right o' th' child-t'-be. I hardly would call that short-sighted or priggish and it most certainly is givin' thought t' th' consequences. That ye could be so callous in yer disregard fer people who find themselves strugglin' with these questions says more about yer lack o' consideration o' these issues than it does about th' varied attitudes and opinions about people who would restrict abortion more that I would like t' see it restricted. {/if}

{if FALSE} {/if} {if TRUE} I think 'tis interestin' th' people who would shoot a juvenile delinquent in “self-defense” fer breakin' and enterin' are usually th' same ones that call abortion murder. In th' first instance someone’s shot because he broke into yer home intendin' t' deprive ye o' a TV set or whatever. That’s self-defense, I'll warrant ye. I wouldn’t want t' be th' only liberal in Buttfuckville, Texas t' defend th' right t' life o' th' little miscreant who’s goin' t' hell because in th' Bible it says thou shalt not steal. Arrrr! And anyway shootin' that scurvey dog is a Constitutional right under th' Second Amendment blah blah blah. In th' second instance, someone -- a barely differentiated blob o' cells, t' be exact -- dies so th' mother might not be deprived o' an education, career, & etc, to be sure. -- basically th' next twenty years o' that comely wench life. And hoist the mainsail! That’s murder.

See how that works, to be sure? TV, good; life, bad.

Bottom line: I don’t want me tax dollars supportin' some slut who had sex out o' wedlock and it serves that comely wench right she has t' raise a child in poverty and if it turns t' drugs and becomes a juvenile delinquent that we shoot in th' back fer breakin' into our homes t' steal our TV sets t' sell t' homosexualists t' get money t' buy drugs, well that’s what Jesus would do. {/if}

Actually, I think 'tis a bit more than that. The number I've heard is 50-70%. And therein lies a little problem fer th' self-proclaimed pro-lifers. If they really believed every conceptus were bein' a person, fully equal t' any adult in every way, then why aren't they agitatin' fer increased fundin' into th' causes o' spontaneous abortion? Shiver me timbers! If up t' 70% o' newborns died on their first day o' life, I would expect there t' be a huge outcry demandin' research on this problem in order t' end th' pandemic as quickly as possible. Fire the cannons! So, why are th' pro-lifers not demandin' that th' causes o' spontaneous abortion be examined and that pandemic ended? Aarrr! The two possible (non-exclusive) reasons I can think o' are 1. They dern't know enough biology t' know that this problem exists. In which case, why are we payin' any attention t' their ramblin's on a subject they know nothin' about? Aarrr! 2, by Davy Jones' locker. They dern't really believe that an undifferentiated ball o' cells is a person and are only pursuin' a ban on abortion in order t' harass women, we'll keel-haul ye, we'll keel-haul ye! The most likely consequence o' illegalized abortion will not be a return t' "back-alley" abortions, but a flood o' black-market "abortion pills" - possibly even more dangerous, given th' vagaries o' th' contraband pharmaceuticals industry and th' folklore o' desperate users. {if FALSE} {/if} {if TRUE} Well, yer usual high-quality commenters have weighted in already, and I like th' follow-up research on STDs and th' likelihood o' a state's protection o' women's rights.

I'm troubled by th' idea that if Roe is struck down (or th' Democrats make a strategic retreat on it), what happens in those states who claim th' ownership o' all female reproductive systems w/in their sovereign borders? And hoist the mainsail! Will we see stakeouts o' women's health clinics at state lines, like we used (still do) see liquor stores on county and state boundaries, with any eye t' publicizin'/harassin' women who have t' leave their own state fer health care? And hoist the mainsail!
